The Alps’ Next Act: Wellness, Longevity and Five-Star Luxury

Rising demand for premium accommodation and wellbeing-led travel is reshaping the Alpine holiday market. Luxury alpine holidays are entering a new phase, and it has less to do with skiing than with wellness.

For decades the Alps have been marketed primarily as a winter sports destination. But a combination of shifting travel habits, rising demand for premium accommodation and growing interest in wellness is quietly transforming how the region is positioned to UK travellers.

Recent research from ABTA highlights the scale of the shift towards higher-end travel among British holidaymakers. According to ABTA’s Travel Trends 2025 report, 35% of UK travellers who took an overseas holiday stayed in five-star accommodation, up from 30% the previous year,  one of the clearest indicators of premiumisation in the UK travel market.

The trend is even more pronounced among younger travellers. ABTA found that 47% of Gen Z travellers stayed in five-star accommodation on their overseas holiday, up from 37% the year before. The research also shows that 22% of Gen Z travellers plan to spend more on holidays specifically to upgrade accommodation, compared with 14% of Millennials, 11% of Baby Boomers and 8% of Gen X.

At the same time, wellness is becoming a mainstream driver of travel decisions. Research from Mintel shows that 61% of UK travellers aged 16–34 plan holidays with a wellness element, reflecting growing interest in experiences focused on recovery, nature, sleep and physical wellbeing.

Taken together, these trends are helping to reposition the Alps as more than a traditional ski destination. ABTA also notes that winter travel is evolving beyond purely sports-led trips, with wellbeing and spa breaks, alongside ski and snowboarding holidays, highlighted as areas of increasing interest within winter travel.

For the alpine hospitality sector, this shift presents a clear opportunity: combining high-quality accommodation with sophisticated spa facilities, nature-led experiences and active outdoor lifestyles to attract a new generation of wellness-focused travellers.

Across Austria a number of alpine resorts are already reflecting this broader repositioning of the mountains as year-round wellness destinations.

Stock Resort is among the properties blending ski access with longevity-focused wellness programming, including yoga, movement therapies and large-scale spa facilities designed to appeal to both families and multi-generational travellers.

In Austria’s Arlberg region, Wellnesshotel Warther Hof combines high-altitude skiing with traditional alpine recovery experiences, offering sauna rituals, sleep-focused relaxation spaces and wellness programmes designed to support post-ski regeneration.

Elsewhere, Wellnessresidenz Alpenrose near Lake Achensee demonstrates how alpine wellness is expanding beyond winter travel. With a large Alpine Spa, lakeside setting and outdoor wellness garden, the resort positions itself as a year-round wellness retreat attracting both families and active travellers.

On the Mieming Plateau in Tyrol, Alpenresort Schwarz integrates wellness programmes with outdoor activities such as golf, hiking and yoga, illustrating the growing overlap between active holidays and structured health and longevity experiences.

For couples seeking a more intimate mountain escape, Hotel Post Lermoos offers a boutique-style alpine retreat overlooking the Zugspitze massif, combining culinary experiences, spa facilities and adults-only weeks aimed at travellers looking for relaxation alongside active mountain experiences.

Taken together, these properties reflect a wider evolution taking place across alpine tourism. As UK travellers increasingly prioritise comfort, wellbeing and experiential travel, the traditional ski holiday is evolving into something broader: a luxury alpine wellness escape designed for recovery, connection with nature and year-round mountain living.

For the travel trade, the result is a growing opportunity to package alpine holidays not only as winter sports breaks but as premium wellness experiences that appeal to affluent couples, families and younger travellers seeking restorative escapes in nature.
